About Me

Name:

Gowtham Ramamurthy
Cincinnati, OH
An Indian graduate student doing his MBA at the Carl H. Lindner College of Business, University of Cincinnati.

A biker, foodie and philanthropist with a passion to help others. One of my life goals is to make a difference in the lives of all children in need. This opportunity will enable me to donate all proceeds collected through this fundraiser to the children and move me a little further towards my goal.

My Current Goal

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela
I believe that investing in education is the single most effective means of reducing poverty. This is the motto of my fundraiser! I am launching it a few months earlier through this website. I will then use social media to get the word out. I also plan to go on a fundraising motorcycle ride through all the 48 lower states of USA this summer to get the word out as far as possible.

I will spread my cause en route through flyers and by connecting with people. I am also arranging mini fundraising events in a few cities around the country, with the help of friends, where I would be stopping by and addressing people.

All the funds raised would directly go to 'Save the Children', the world's leading independent organization for children. It will be used for the educational needs of impoverished children in USA and India.

Timeline of Activities

September

The Eureka moment
I have always been very motivated towards giving back to the society. I have been practising it too in some way, before I got to the US. After coming here, I was completely clueless on where to begin. It all started with a scholarship at my university, where we had to organize a fundraiser to be eligible. People usually do something that they are passionate about and turn it into a fundraiser. I stumbled upon a blog where a student from MIT hiked the Appalachian Trail and raised money for a good cause. That was when I decided to ride through all the 48 lower states of the US. The magnitude of people I would be able to reach through a fundraiser of this sort gave me good hopes. Also, it would be a tremendous challenge for me, both physically and mentally.

October

The Challenges
Many thought I was insane, but there were this encouraging few who persuaded me to go ahead. I am indebted to you all, without whom this would have never happened. The rest of the month was spent researching about the feasibility of the trip and planning on the most effective ways to raise funds. After days of brainstorming and research, I gave myself a pat on my back and told myself "Looks like you can pull it off!!"

November

The Missing pieces of the Puzzle
The month of November was when everything started falling into place. I partnered with Save the Children, the world's leading independent organization for children. This was established after several communications between me and their team. I would represent them and raise funds on their behalf. Half the money that I raise would be used for children in the US and half the money would go to children back in India, all through Save the Children.

December

Getting ready to Launch
After three months of juggling between my courses, work and planning the fundraiser, I had my winter break. It wasn't time to relax though! I had to get the website out by the end of this month in order to have sufficient time to fundraise. The whole of December was spent designing and working on this website. I had to also set up a presence on the social media websites Facebook and Twitter.

Jan 2014

Website launched!!!
We are half way there! Now that the website is out, I am using the social media to reach out to people and getting them to contribute to the fundraiser. I am also focusing on ways to market the fundraiser and simultaneously preparing for the ride. Please donate and help spread the word... :)

April 27 - May 17

THE 48 STATES RIDE
This is when the actual ride is going to happen. The route with stops is still being planned. I have around 20 days to ride around 10,000 miles in 48 states. That is around 500 miles everyday, plus the fundraisers on the way. Fingers crossed, more details soon... :)
